The Corpus Christi Rayz broke open a 1-1 game with four goals in the final 5:30 of the first period boosting them to a 7-4 victory over the Memphis RiverKings Thursday night at the DeSoto Civic Center. Rayz veteran Bernie John had a goal and 3 assists and Josh Miskovich had a pair of goals to help the Rayz end a 2-game losing skid and send Memphis into one.
The Rayz struck first on Miskovich’s first of the night, an unassisted goal that came after a turnover in the Memphis end, at 9:36 of the first. Dorian Anneck’s fourth of the season tied it at 14:23 on the power-play, but what began just 13 seconds later would quickly snowball into a 5-1 first intermission lead for the Rayz. Derrick McIver scored with 5:22 left on the clock and by the time it read :29, John, Randy Murphy and Shawn Legault had scored to make it 5-1. That’s 4 goals in a span of 4:53.
Memphis outscored Corpus 3-2 in the final two periods on two goals from Ryan Campbell and another from Travis Banga, but it just wasn’t enough to overcome the Rayz.
Miguel Beaudry, who was pulled after the fifth goal, took the loss in the nets while the Rayz’ Brent Zelenewich was the winning goalie with 36 saves on 40 shots. The RiverKings out-shot their opponents for just the second time this season, finishing with a 40-31 advantage.
Corpus Christi improved to 4-3-0 while Memphis lost their second straight and fell to 2-4-0 with Bossier-Shreveport coming to the DeSoto Civic Center tomorrow (Friday) night at 7:05.
